Two imprisoned men bond over a number of years, finding solace and eventual redemption through acts of common decency.

Based on the novella Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption by Stephen King which was published in his 1982 Different Seasons collection.

Alienated – when Andy (Tim Robins) first arrives at Shawshank Prison he keeps to himself until finally breaking his solitude by speaking to Red (Morgan Freeman).

Rejuvenated – after Andy finally escapes by crawling through a sewer pipe he emerges into a rain storm a free man, going on to create a new life for himself on the outside.

Suicidal – when Brooks Hatlen (James Whitmore) is paroled after 50 years in prison, he cannot adjust to the outside world and hangs himself.
